Grand Theft Auto VI is shaping up to be a genuine technical leap for the series, with Rockstar confirming several advanced rendering features well beyond what GTA V was built for.
Ray-Traced Global Illumination
Rockstar has officially confirmed ray-traced global illumination, meaning lighting throughout Vice City and the surrounding Leonida map (see our map guide) reacts realistically to light sources, time of day, and reflective surfaces — a significant step up from GTA V’s baked lighting approach.
Strand-Based Hair Physics
Character hair uses strand-based physics rather than the simpler hair rendering seen in GTA V, meaning individual strands react to movement, wind, and water more realistically — a technique also seen in recent high-end titles across the industry.
Dynamic Clothing
Clothing on Jason, Lucia, and NPCs has been confirmed to use dynamic physics, reacting naturally to movement rather than relying on rigid, pre-baked animations.
Growing Facial Hair
In a detail confirmed through official trailer footage, character facial hair can grow over time — a small but notable touch toward the kind of persistent detail Rockstar built into Red Dead Redemption 2’s protagonist.
Why This Matters for Performance
These features are graphically demanding, which is part of why GTA 6 launches on current-gen hardware only — PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — with no last-gen console version.
