GTA 6 Physical vs Digital Edition: Which Should You Buy

GTA 6 will be available both physically and digitally at launch. Both options get you the same game and release date, but there are real practical differences worth weighing before you decide.

Digital Edition Advantages

  • Free GTA+ month — digital pre-orders through the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store include a complimentary month of GTA+ (see our GTA+ guide)
  • Ability to pre-load ahead of launch (see our pre-load guide)
  • No disc swapping, no risk of losing or damaging physical media

Physical Edition Advantages

  • Ability to resell or trade in the game later
  • Can be shared/lent among friends or family (subject to platform rules)
  • Often preferred by collectors, especially for a major flagship release like this
  • Doesn’t count against your Series S digital storage the same way once uninstalled, though the install itself still takes the same space while installed

Important Note for Xbox Series S Owners Specifically

Xbox Series S has no disc drive at all — meaning “physical” copies on Series S still function as a code-in-a-box product that requires a full digital download regardless. If you’re on Series S, the physical vs. digital decision is really about collector value and resale, not disc-based convenience, since you’ll be downloading either way. Check our storage guide to make sure you’re prepared either way.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Choose digital if: you want the free GTA+ month, want to pre-load, and don’t care about reselling later
  • Choose physical if: you’re a collector, want resale value down the line, or plan to lend the game to others

Quick Facts Recap

  • Digital bonus: Free 1-month GTA+ (via PlayStation Store/Microsoft Store pre-order)
  • Xbox Series S physical copies: Still require a full digital download (no disc drive)
  • Both editions: Same release date, same game content
